Cavedogs Design & Construction of a Straw Bale Home
Lowell, Vermont
Construction of a straw bale home began in June 2000. The main part of the house is a 16-sided, post & beam structure, 32 ft. interior diameter, with a loft. Walls are straw bale in-fill, to be stuccoed on both sides. Materials consist of both old and new, re-using old materials where feasible. Post and beams come from a local 100 yr. old barn while roof joists are new. Construction is expected to be completed in 2001.

Power will be generated onsite by a wind turbine and solar panels with a backup generator. Radiant floor heating in an earthen floor will be installed. A composting toilet will be used and a simple greywater system installed.

Some pictures of the project follow. More stuff will be posted as the project continues...

First row of roofing ... it's a good thing we didn't know how long it would take to roof the entire thing!
